The ABC’s of Children’s Dental Health: An Alphabetical Guide

A is for Age 1 Dental Visit

Pediatric dentists like to see all kids by their first birthday, even if there aren’t teeth yet! (Spoiler alert, there probably will be!)

The greatest benefit of this first visit is establishing a dental home. Just by visiting a pediatric dentist for the first time, we’ve created a partnership, and Good Life Smiles will provide emergency calls for your child 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. We’ve got you covered.

What Happens at the Age 1 Dental Visit?

Much of this visit is spent getting to know you and your child (relationships are important to us!), and we’ll discuss various topics to help ensure your child develops healthy habits that will lead to a healthy smile. Topics discussed will include:

  • Oral hygiene strategies and recommended dental products

  • Your child’s diet and how it affects their oral health

  • Oral habits such as pacifier use or thumbsucking

  • Injury prevention and what to do in case of dental emergency

  • Any dental questions you may have

After our conversation, we’ll provide a dental cleaning and exam.

What Does an Age 1 Dental Visit Look Like?

A lot like this!

Pictured is Dr. Pete’s daughter Libby during one of her early dental visits. Libby is sitting on her mother Sarah’s lap, and Sarah is holding Libby’s hands for comfort. Libby’s head is laid back onto a padded lap exam board in Dr. Pete’s lap, and Dr. Pete is supporting her head to clean her teeth and conduct an exam. The dental cleaning and exam take about 5 minutes total, which is ideal for wiggly one-year-olds.

Can I Take Pictures During the Visit?

Yes! We’re so happy you selected Good Life Smiles for your child’s care, and we’re proud to be part of this exciting milestone. Snap away! Don’t worry if your child cries or wiggles during the dental cleaning and exam. It’s common for kids to be a little hesitant to lay back at early dental appointments, and we’ll take things at their pace until they feel more comfortable and confident. Photos of any and all emotions during your child’s first visit will make for fun memories down the road!
